VW's diesel scandal and Shkreli's drug price-gouging

More of the same - this week was not exactly ethical capitalism's (if such a thing exists) finest hour:
VW may have to pay fines in the billions for deceiving pollution monitors and violating the Clean Air Act with their TDI "clean diesel" vehicles (stock plunged 20% in response). Apparently it's not so easy for a diesel engine to be both clean burning AND great mileage.
There is a new (and sick) trend in biopharma (link1, link2) where shell companies buy up the rights to "below market price" drugs and then jack up the prices by orders of magnitude to make a ROI. Well, at least those firms aren't deluding themselves that they're trying to help patients - they're explicit in their pure pursuit of profit, and it doesn't matter if needy patients are priced out.

Following up on VW and drug prices:

I just wonder why VW's diesel rivals didn't question how VW could get superior mileage/torque while still keeping pollution low (the diesel engine is kind of zero-sum for these performance metrics). Like wouldn't they say, "Wow, in our lab we can only get 25 mpg if we stay under the NOx limit - I wonder how VW gets 40 mpg?" (numbers are fictional) Other auto makers are professing that their vehicles don't cheat, but we'll see. Even though very few light cars in the US are diesel, we of course have plenty of semi-trucks and heavier vehicles spewing particulates and carcinogens every day (but at least in CA, these vehicles now have to adhere to tighter limits). Not sure how big the impact will be in Europe, where ~half their light cars are diesel (but they have fewer cars per capita and drive fewer miles per capita vs. the US).

He's been such an a-hole and unapologetic capitalist re: his company's actions that he's garnered a ton of negative publicity. That actually helps to shed light on the drug price-gouging issue that Big Pharma has been engaging in for decades (BS loopholes to extend patents, buying the rights to generics or cheaper rival drugs to keep them off the market, etc.). Hopefully the increased attention and outrage will motivate lawmakers to consider new rules for the industry, but I'm not holding my breath.

A marathon in Beijing - REALLY!?!

One of the dumber ideas I've heard about in a while. US soldiers didn't have a choice - they were ordered to fight in our foolish exercise in Iraq. But these runners voluntarily participated and paid money, why!?! Of all the marathons in the world.
I guess this is another reflection of the hubris and obliviousness of Chinese officials. They want to do all the things that the other major global cities do, regardless of feasibility. But how can they put thousands of people in danger for an insignificant race? With all the hard-breathing of a ~3 hr outdoor race during especially hazardous conditions, is that like equivalent damage to a normal person living in Beijing for a month? And don't people know that those dust masks don't do squat against pollutants and particulates as small as smog (2.5 microns diameter, which you need an industrial respirator for)?
But besides the runners, of course millions of people have to live through these horrible conditions for their entire lives (not to mention the questionable safety of their consumer goods, drinking water, workplace conditions, and roadways). The Chinese health system is crap for most people, and the lower-income folks may not be able to afford air purification measures.

Did BP and the Feds do more harm than good trying to clean up the Gulf?

The oil's all gone, victims are fairly compensated, and the Gulf is just like how it used to be, right?
We expected this problem wouldn't go away so smoothly, and unfortunately we were proven right. BP seemed to care more about concealing their Gulf spill rather than actually cleaning it properly. Remember how they heavily relied on chemical dispersants, such as Corexit (sounds like maximum strength white-out)? Corexit is banned by many nations, but is manufactured by Ecolab in the US, so it is still open for business (most times, the burden of proof is not on the company but on environmentalists/others to prove that a substance causes harm). Other nations prefer to use oil eating microbes, but Corexit just dissolves oil globs into smaller ones (out of sight, out of mind). The hope was that sea life would digest the smaller droplets and the problem would be solved (but what happens when sea life ingests the Corexit too?). 4 years after the disaster, oil is still washing up on the Gulf Coast. So maybe some of the millions of barrels of oil were digested, but clearly a great deal was not.

So the dispersant strategy was partly ineffective, but what about the side effects? Anything that chemically separates aggregated hydrocarbons is probably not healthy for other organic matter. When Corexit was used in Valdez and the Gulf, hundreds of workers came down with respiratory issues (the chemical is sprayed out of hoses and nozzles like Agent Orange, and can be easily inhaled). Coastal residents also documented many cases of skin rashes and boils. BP and the Coast Guard did not have its cleaning crews wear any protective clothing or respirators. According to VICE, they even barred people from wearing respirators because of the negative impression.

Under the water, many studies have shown that Corexit+oil is much more toxic on some marine life than oil or Corexit alone. So the shrimping industry was heavily affected too. One business reported ~50% of shrimp exhibiting illnesses and deformities, often in the gills. They are obviously unsellable and possibly unsafe for consumption (despite the FDA quickly pronouncing Gulf seafood to be safe just 4 months after the blowout... but it takes them 10 years to declare a medicine to be safe?).
Clearly, this cautionary tale demonstrates the dangers of (1) our dependence on fossil fuels, (2) our hubris that the latest technologies will never fail and we can safely tap more challenging resource deposits in more environmentally sensitive areas, (3) the political influences of the petrochemical industry, and (4) lax/incompetent regulation. Also, a destroyed city can be rebuilt, but a decimated ecosystem may be irreversible (at least on human schedules).

BP should not only compensate victims of the blowout, but also of the "cleanup". Whoever authorized the use of Corexit at this scale (without sufficient impact study a priori and public oversight) should be fired and possibly jailed. If this isn't grounds for prohibiting a foreign company from doing business in the US (and hopefully nationalizing their assets), I don't know what is. "Corporations are people, too", but if we can drone-execute a US citizen overseas without trial, then we should be able to give companies a lifetime ban if the body of evidence is so compelling. We lock up poor minorities and throw away the key, and AFAIK they did much less harm to the US than BP so far.

The US will soon be the number one energy producer, but is it worth it?


This is mostly driven by fracking and the growing global demand for energy keeping fracking economical. I am not insinuating causation here, but it's probably not coincidence that the top energy producing nations are all corrupt, repressive, wealth imbalanced, polluted, and economically dysfunctional outside of the energy sector. Therefore, I am not sure we should want the US to go down the same path. The notable exceptions are Canada and Norway, but they benefit from strong public institutions and more balanced economies. In our post-Citizens United, underfunded-EPA, too-big-to-fail corporate reality, I just hope we don't resemble Nigeria or Russia too much. 

We've already discussed all the potential reasons that fracking is an environmental risk, but what about the economic upside? Some in the industry would claim that the fracking boom vaulted the US out of recession. It's undeniable that more jobs, corporate profits, and taxes were generated, but enough to have a material overall GDP impact? Business Insider and W Post are not sure (see below). The boom has triggered the market price of gas and electricity to go down a lot, but energy is a small fraction of modern industrial costs (compared to labor and raw materials), so it's not like the lower prices led to much higher profits or cheaper products for consumers. Also, the oil & gas industry is fairly automated with low labor participation relative to capital investment. So there weren't that many new jobs created, and even in drill-baby-drill Texas, only 6.5% of jobs are in energy (and 1% nationally). So even if the industry doubles in size (and you believe the API's claim that for every 1 new petro-job created, 2.7 other indirect jobs are too), it's not enough to make up for the 7M-plus jobs lost during the Great R. But what about GDP growth? Well, oil & gas is only 2.5% of our economy (it's a commodity after all), and of the 7.6% GDP growth the US experienced since 2009, only 0.6% can be attributed to the "energy boom" according to Capital Economics. 

Therefore, is all the environmental risk worth these meager benefits? As we've discussed before, just because it is economically justified at present to do something doesn't mean it's the best available course of action long-term. And in many cases, once we commit down a path, we can't undo it later. We can always drill in the future after more testing is done and if national needs dictate. But if we drill now (chasing short-term bucks and jobs, however small), we can never revert to "the way it used to be" if we discover that we made a mistake.

More consequences of fracking

We've discussed fracking before, and now it is a fairly mainstream topic (but you heard about it here first!). Like the almost unreal tar sands projects in northern Canada, maybe we have to rethink our energy consumption habits if our society finds a process as zany as fracking to be economically viable: truck tons of equipment to some remote site, drill a deep hole, then pump millions gallons of chemical water thousands of feet underground just to release some methane trapped in rock pores. And of course we don't capture all the gas, so some leaks and contaminates the environment and human settlements. And then there's the question of what to do with all the waste water (or as the industry likes to call it, "produced water"). Plus, it's not like the gas firms are so diligent to recover every last ounce of their poison. They of course swear that the used water is perfectly safe. If so, then why did the industry lobby for a waiver from the EPA Clean Water Act? And why then are they pumping/trucking the water hundreds of miles for underground disposal in economically-depressed states like Arkansas and Ohio, places desperate for new jobs/investment at the cost of public safety and the environment? Like with nuclear power, maybe "green" natural gas wouldn't appear so cheap and clean if the waste management costs and other externalities were rightfully factored into the market price. I know we want to wean ourselves from foreign oil, combat climate change, and the US is sitting on huge natural gas reserves. Gas prices are at almost record lows. But nothing comes free. If we had the misfortune of living near a neighbor who sold land rights for drilling or waste disposal, we might feel a lot differently.

So on top of all these problems associated with fracking, now there is evidence that the fracking and waste water disposal may even be causing small earthquakes! Water is a lubricant, and a lot of water is very heavy and exerts pressure on its surroundings. Mix a small fault in there and what do you get? Fortunately the shale gas areas in the US Midwest are not very seismically active, but Ohioans living near waste water wells have experienced 11 quakes as high as 4.0-magnitude since the projects began. So Ohio and Arkansas are now banning waste disposal in certain sensitive areas of their states. Of course the drilling and waste companies say that no one can definitively "prove" that their activities caused the earthquakes, because many natural stimuli also contribute to quakes. The tobacco companies and their lawyers used to say the same thing about their products and human diseases. But enough correlation can usually convince sensible people.

Geology is a delicate balance of forces, and we can barely understand and predict quakes. Like with climate change, some people can't believe that tiny humans and our tailpipes could affect changes in the massive atmosphere. But small perturbations eventually accumulate into big consequences. Yes, faults and rock formations are huge compared to the relatively small volumes of water we're injecting, but a tiny pin can pop a balloon. Aware of this controversy, companies have tried to filter and recycle the waste water instead, but couldn't get the output to meet gov't purity standards (which I'm sure aren't that strict). If so, then I don't see how it makes sense to dispose of the untreated water in the ground, where it can eventually seep into aquifers and faults. There's just a lot we don't know about the consequences of fracking, but US policy is reactive - the companies say it's safe, so let them do it until there is clear proof of a problem, and then maybe take action if Congress or the courts are interested. But by that time it's too late for the first rounds of victims. And the gov't fines and litigation settlements are measly compared to the huge profits already extracted.

In the EU, drilling companies have seen the boom in North America and want a piece of the action. Shale gas exists over there too, but the French government has voted to ban domestic fracking entirely (despite sitting on the 2nd largest reserves in the EU). They have more incentive to frack too: energy prices are usually 4X as expensive in France than the US (and they are at the mercy of unstable exporters like Russia and Libya), but their consumption is probably 1/2 ours, and their energy companies seem to have less political sway. They have studied the risks and costs, and found that a moratorium is the best course of action for their people's future. Poland, with the biggest gas reserves in the EU, is pushing hard to frack (and foreign energy companies like Exxon and Conoco are salivating to get a piece of the action), as they are under more under Russia's thumb and dependent on dirty coal than Western Europe. The EU can impose union-wide environmental regulations, so the countries are sparring as to what the overall policy on fracking should be. It's tough because the EU also had ambitious carbon reduction goals, and converting to natural gas would help there (especially since nuclear is falling out of favor after Fukushima). But we shouldn't create 2 new problems to solve 1 old problem. Of course the more consequence-free solution is energy conservation, but that is not as sexy as a new technology or new exploration.

Honeybees and colony collapse disorder: much of our food at risk

Maybe you guys have been following this colony collapse disorder (CCD) crisis. But since 2006, as much as 90% of honeybee hives in US communities have suddenly died in a matter of months (this has been observed in EU nations too). Bees are some of the most evolved, beautiful, and efficient creatures in natural history, and the species is 100M years old (humans have been using them for honey for 6K years). Their mass deaths are likely attributed to human actions. Analysis of dead bees reveals symptoms similar to human AIDS - their immune systems were compromised, which hampers digestion, cognition, and makes it easier for fungi, mites, or other pathogens to attack them. Also, forager bees (that usually have excellent navigation and communication) fly out in search of food, but then don't communicate normally and don't find their way back, so the hive starves.

Weakly-supported culprits include wireless radiation, pesticides, global warming/pollution, and GM crops with anti-pest properties. Concentrated pesticides and pollution can definitely kill bees, but CCD also occurs in areas without high incidences of these phenomena. It's most likely a confluence of several of these factors, and maybe others that we haven't identified yet. The presence of a virus in CCD-affected bees seems to be the most prevalent stressor, but the virus alone can't account for all the deaths. Some research is now directed towards cross-breeding virus-resistant African bees with domestic honeybees, but that is no guarantee of eliminating CCD (and new GM species carry their own concerns). 

Bees pollinate over 100 key flowering crops (including some plants that our livestock eats), contribute to 30% of our food supply (pretty much all ag. products besides staple grains that self-fertilize), and their low-cost services are worth at least $15B in economic output to the US. 3/4 of all current plant species depend on animal pollinators to reproduce. There is no insect substitute but the less effective and more fragile butterfly, and as far as I know only one province in China is trying out another species. They use human workers to spread pollen in their lucrative pear orchards, after industrial pollution wiped out local bees. Already in the US, habitat loss from urbanization and air pollution have wiped out most indigenous bees prior to this CCD crisis. Now there is a need for commercial beekeepers to truck mobile domesticated hives around the nation to pollinate various crops when in season (if local bears don't get to the honey-rich hives first). But among that population, about 1/3 of them (or 800K hives) have collapsed. Now we depend on costly Australian bee imports to make up the shortfall.

CCD should be a reminder of how fragile our civilization actually is without the help of very simple organisms that we take for granted. But their destruction will almost certainly lead to ours (or at least a more monotonous, unhealthy diet), so it behooves us to be much more aware and careful. Is it worth it to risk this much just to squeeze out some bucks of profit from another megawatt, strip mall, or bushel of corn? It's easy for industrialists to keep up their damaging practices while they hide behind the excuse of "where's the proof?", and nothing will change without new laws or massive public uproar.

Scientists think we're almost "lucky" to observe CCD, because it serves as a reminder and indicator of environmental stress likely due to human actions. Who knows about all the other harmful, toxic processes and problems that go unnoticed? Companies should be required to strongly demonstrate safety before being permitted to sell new products, like we do with drugs and foods. The absence of evidence of harm doesn't necessarily prove safety. And environmental impact assessments are clearly lacking if we approve so many projects that still end up causing damage down the road. But I forgot, regulations kill jobs. Well irresponsible companies kill living things, including people. What do we prefer?

More on nuclear power

Since my dad is a nuclear engineer and I've maintained an interest in nuclear power over the years I'll do my best to share what I know (i.e. my own $.02)...
Apart from the obvious and still legitimate concerns for plant accidents...

Uranium mining (on the whole) is not that expensive and not that dirty (especially when compared to some of the other things which we pull out of the ground).
Obviously the up-front costs of plant construction are huge...

Comparing the incentives is a bit like comparing apples and oranges; nuclear is a mature industry and (as such) doesn't require the type of incentives which renewables do in order to offer a compelling case as a power source on a cost per kilowatt hour basis.
With current technology, nuclear plant...

Take a look at what the German government just did with their plants; there's no technical obstacle to keeping many of the plants in service and (as such) clean, cheap (i.e. <$.05 kW/hr.) electricity from nuclear sources is as much a matter of political will as it is anything else.
The US hasn't built a new nuclear plant since 1978...

Fuel storage is something my dad's company has been working on for more than ten years.  Although you are correct in stating that NIMBY is a problem (it always has been) dry storage does offer a means for utilities to bridge the gap between fuel pools which are full and have outlived their originally intended duration and more centralized (i.e. Yucca Mountain) storage.  Approval for new plants is also a matter of will and (given the state of the economy and energy security challenges commodity price changes pose) you may see the pendulum of will swing back to where it came from (i.e. accepting nuclear power as something less than ideal but nevertheless necessary).

I disagree with your numbers (Diablo Canyon has been producing energy since the mid-80's at <$.05kW/hr.) and your assessment of "net energy" (you've probably misinterpreted the numbers as it would seem highly unlikely that a single nuclear power plant would be built if 100KW would need to be spent to create 30KW).
Then there's the old hope that technology will save us...

The advancements are significant but can't be referenced easily (or casually, as it were) since most of the advancements haven't been implemented in practice...  The fact remains that (in France) fuel is simply re-run through the reactor again and again and again (thus solving both a fuel and a waste problem).  The degree of attractiveness of nuclear energy is very much in the eye of the beholder; how attractive did nuclear energy look in 2007 when OPEC had the U.S. by the balls (yet again) and the NIMBY crowd from the 1970s was shouting "drill baby drill!"?  I've recommended it to you before but if you're serious about understanding energy you should read Huber & Mills' The Bottomless Well since the authors (although espousing a ridiculous supply-side rhetoric which is much more fitting for rock stars than economists) do a fairly decent job of breaking down the energy pie (i.e. what we produce, what we consume) as well as the changes to the same over time.
Humans will always tinker with clever ways to generate energy...

I agree that engineering decisions are all about optimization under constraint... but I think you're presenting a false dichotomy when you suggest that our choice is nuclear or renewables: do you honestly not see that your argument would be the one which an oil giant would make (i.e. one of "divide and conquer")?

Well, you don't really source any of your claims, and nuclear power has gone out of favor in northern CA for some years now so we don't have much local access to the industry. Maybe my points also come from a biased source (a text on environmental science and sustainability: http://www.amazon.com/Environmental-Science-Principles-Connections-Solutions/dp/0495383376), but the author's claims are backed by DOE studies.

How do you know that U-mining is "not that dirty"? Tell that to the low-wage Navajo miners the gov't exploited during the Cold War: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiation_Exposure_Compensation_Act.

Large scale mining is always dirty with a lot of waste-rock generated, which is radioactive in uranium's case and pollutes groundwater: http://www.articlesbase.com/science-articles/problems-of-uranium-mining-762482.html. I don't know if the U-industry is worse than coal or copper, but mining never has a small eco-footprint.

Even if you don't accept that history, my basic point was that uranium extraction requires energy (which nuclear advocates want us to forget), just like hydrocarbons or renewables. You need to spend energy to make energy. Some may argue that the nuclear cycle is overall "efficient", but please provide calculations then. Some may say that the nuclear cycle is much less carbon-intensive, so I'd like to see proof (ideally from neutral sources). Yes energy and pollution are associated with wind and solar farms also, but after scale-up, fair subsidies, and other improvements, those energy solutions can probably become environmentally and economically sustainable if we change our electricity consumption habits. The sun always has and always will be (by humanity's time scale) Earth's best and cheapest energy source, so why not exploit that rather than the dangerous, expensive, and complex nuclear cycle? Hydrocarbons and nuclear will NEVER be environmentally sustainable, and may not be economically viable as the easy-access reserves are depleted, and if you subtract gov't subsidies. Bottom line, no energy project in the world's history is more expensive than a MW-scale nuclear plant. This is partly because we have to build in so many safeguards in order to avoid accidents, which could be worse than the BP spill. Since the consequences are so dire, that cost will always be associated with nuclear. One can never engineer zero risk.

I don't know why you mention the German example, since they've had 3 major accidents in the 1980's, and partly because of that their government has decided to gradually phase out all their 17 plants by 2020: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_power_in_Germany#Accidents. Though Merkel's government is trying to reverse the decision amid protests: http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/germanypoliticsenergynuclear.

Dumb humans build wildly inefficient and net-negative projects all the time. Look at the 3 Gorges Dam in China or the Joint Strike Fighter. We love our Rube Goldberg devices. It may be hard to believe that nuclear is so inefficient, but that shows you how effective industry PR and lobbying has been over the years. I didn't misrepresent data, but I admit that I did selectively present it. Converting electricity to heat is also an efficiency-losing step, so nuclear power that creates electricity for heat is a net energy loss, and looks bad considering other heating methods (passive solar, natural gas). So yeah, I was using the most extreme example, or the worst possible application of nuclear power. If you're using nuclear to power your blender or computer, the energy ratios are better, but still not enough to justify the costs IMO.

I never said that the choice was exclusively nuclear or renewables, but really there aren't many other choices out there. Large nations' energy portfolios should be diverse. But most of us generally understand the pros and cons of hydrocarbon-based electricity, so nuclear and renewables are the only other major alternatives. The suitability of each is case-dependent, but overall you haven't really made any arguments why renewables are inferior to nuclear if the playing field was level. How would you envision our nation's energy economy today if during the OPEC embargo, the government devoted all the resources earmarked for nuclear to renewables? Do you really think we'd be worse off?

Agreed (mining is a dirty business)... but your point was that uranium mining is somehow especially dirty (which I refute); on the whole it's not necessarily any dirtier than other forms of mining (we probably aren't missing any mountaintops in West Virginia due to uranium mining).

You should be a little more precise when talking about efficiency (like the difference between thermodynamic or Rankine-cycle efficiency, which has a theoretical upper-bound which applies to all steam-based energy generation, say ~40%) and solar-cell efficiency (which is limited to less than 20% with even the newest PV cells).  The numbers you cited with respect to "net energy" aren't really apples-to-apples (which, in most conversations you'll ever hear in the media, boils down to cost per kilowatt-hour as a measure of efficiency).

It's a great idea... but the technology has only increased by a few percentage points in terms of efficiency since the late 1970's.  I suspect the reasons are the same as the answer to the question "Why don't more homes have passive water heaters?"

The deadline for exhaustion of hydrocarbons has come and gone more than once and nuclear is not strictly (by definition) "renewable" (i.e. you would run out of uranium and/or waste fuel) at some point... but for all intensive purposes such distinctions are academic.  Also, if your metric for environmental sustainability is acceptance by The Sierra Club then you should probably double-check your assertion.

No, this is basically not true; the operating cost for a plant (after it's built) is (as in the case of PG&E's Diablo Canyon) something like $.03/kWh (some plants are known to run at an even lower cost hence my very loose off-the-cuff metric of <$.05); although the plants are capitally intensive you would have a very difficult time demonstrating that the initial capital outlay is somehow more flawed than building some massive piece of pork like a sports stadium (and definitely an impossible time when you consider how long a given reactor can run given the political will v/s how quickly a team can move given the... well... lack of will).  Also, I might argue that developing an operating system is more expensive than a nuclear power plant since the metric you are using (implicitly) does not account for engineering man-hours.

Yes, but you can engineer next to zero risk, which is what a nuclear power plant embodies. Also, most modern reactors don't afford disaster on the scale of Chernobyl (let alone Macondo or Prudoe Bay).

I mention it because there was recent news that the "sunset" for the plants has been extended; the extension came by way of executive fiat (and not as a result of any change to the daily operations of the plants in question or to any of the fundamental aspects of the technology).  Also, one can understand why such a decision would be made: if your car is in good repair and it's been paid why would you seek to replace it with another vehicle which is only arguably more compelling (especially when you needs for transportation services are increasing faster than you provide them for yourself)?
Dumb humans build wildly inefficient and net-negative projects all the time. Look at the 3 Gorges Dam in China or the Joint Strike Fighter. We love our Rube Goldberg devices.

I believe I stated as much in identifying the problematic comparison... but you should keep in mind who you are trying to convince.  Unless you happen to be living in "gasland" the natural gas (which affords a cheap, clean means of heating your home) also takes energy to extract, refine, and distribute; solar films require rare earth elements and even solar panels require semiconductor fabrication facilities.  There's no free lunch (liquid or otherwise).

I suppose I fail to understand what you mean by "if the playing field was level"; there's no question that The Obama Administration is doing everything within its power to advance an agenda of energy diversity (and security) by way of renewables.  Without the incentives being offered renewables would not even be conceivable barring the most extreme circumstances (i.e. $150/barrel oil, supply disruptions, a capacity for America to transcend its political cycles and learn from its previous missteps) and/or government mandate.  Besides, the onus is not on me to prove that renewables are somehow inferior (I'm actually quite keen about them); rather, the onus is on you to somehow show nuclear is inferior and/or not a valid piece of the energy diversity and security puzzle since that is how you started the discussion)!

I never said U-mining was especially dirty vs. other forms of mining. If you reference my first email, I actually said it was merely energy-intensive, but so is most mining. The more I read about radon contamination and groundwater risk, I'm starting to think that it is a lot dirtier. And for the record, I believe mountaintop removal is now prohibited in the US, partly because of eco-protests, but mostly because all the superficial coal is exploited, thereby necessitating costlier and more dangerous subterranean mining. That increases the chance of an Upper Big Branch-like accident, even if mining firms follow regulations, but that is the price we are apparently willing to pay in the West for our lifestyle. Of course the Chinese coal industry is much worse with 100's of miners dying annually.

Your tangent on thermodynamic efficiency misses the point. Of course all energy systems are inefficient from a purely input-output standpoint. Even the living cell, which is one of the most efficient machines ever, loses at least 10% of ATP chemical bond energy to heat waste, but that is the 2nd law in action. The net energy I discussed is how much energy output you get out of a modality vs. the energy it took to produce and implement it. Yes a KW wind turbine is inefficient, but if for argument's sake they only cost $1 to make and install, then their inherent energy conversion inefficiency can be overcome by volume. If a perfectly Carnot efficient GW-scale device costs $1T to make, 20 years to build, and has a 40 year service life, then it's probably not worth it. Thermo efficiency is an especially ludicrous argument for you to make for renewables, since by definition their energy sources are nearly infinite from humanity's viewpoint (i.e. we're not going to run out of sun or wind or wave power). If we can just harness a bit of it economically, we're already better off than nuclear.

Don't be naive - of course the daily ops of a nuclear plant produces carbon (workers' commute, transporting uranium and other materials, maintenance and repair work, etc.). Surely a nuclear plant's carbon footprint is lower than that of a coal plant, but it's not zero. And as I said before, the nuclear plant is but one aspect of the nuclear cycle, which spews carbon every step of the way.

Of course nuclear isn't renewable, that's my whole point from the get-go. I don't think the renewable distinction is academic. Forget climate change and other pollution for a moment, because as you said we've probably seen peak oil pass us by, and at some point it will cost more energy to extract oil than the useful energy we derive from it. Humans want to develop scaled-up renewable energy partly because it avoids that limitation (most modalities at least, since in the case of biofuels, it's not renewable if we consume it faster than the plant feedstock can grow). Also remember that primitive human societies started with renewable power because that is what was most available (obviously), such as the water wheel, windmill, and burning wood for heat. Over half of humans today still rely on those sources, and it mostly works because they live fairly green lifestyles. We both seem to agree that renewables can also work for industrialized societies with the proper conditions in place. Therefore I don't understand your pejorative comment about the Sierra Club's definition of "sustainable". There's nothing wrong with their definition, which is probably the universal definition anyway. An energy source is sustainable if it's use doesn't cause irreversible environmental degradation (in the human time scale at least), and if we won't run out of it under current and projected consumption rates. Almost every human activity causes some environmental damage. We have to decide how much harm we are willing to commit, and how much abuse we think the planet can take before there are major consequences, that in turn put our societies in danger (like deforestation and irresponsible agriculture causing soil degradation and eventually food shortage).

I said no energy project in history is more expensive than a nuclear plant, which is absolutely true and I challenge you to find an industrial exception (not including pork-barrel research projects like the Hadron Collider or Livermore Lab fusion laser). I am referring to the COST of its construction and maintenance, not the cost of the energy coming out once it is built, which is cheating. I also challenge you to support your 5 cents/kWh claim with an independent reference that also takes the entire fuel cycle costs into account. You can't ignore the up-front costs, nor the building time, nor the effective service life (all sources I've consulted state that Cold War plants have an absolute maximum life of 60 years, and that is with top maintenance and public support, so after that you need to decommission them and build a new one - both very costly). I have no idea why you are comparing all this to a sports stadium, which is neither an energy project, nor as expensive to build and run.

There is absolutely no such thing as zero risk; it's like Carnot efficiency, an asymptote. Humans can get pretty close, but not perfect. I suppose you can argue that such a level is "essentially zero risk". But even for modern plant designs that can run without humans for X years (in the event of a pandemic or neutron bomb or something), after that they will melt down or fall apart and contaminate. And I don't think plants are designed to withstand an 8.0 quake, crashing 747, or warfare. Yes we try to build plants far away from faults and such, but you can't protect them 100%.

Maybe the Obama admin. is trying to do "everything in its power" to advance renewables, but their power is limited and it's late in the game. What I mean by a level playing field should be obvious - due to socioeconomic and political considerations over the years, dirty energy (including nuclear) has gotten much more financial/government support than renewables. So Obama can't make up for that decades-long gap. The GOP essentially killed the Obama energy agenda anyway, at least for his first term. And without a carbon tax and end to nuclear subsidies, renewables will never have a really fair shake because we'd still be externalizing the environmental and health costs of dirty energy. I've already said that scaled-up renewable energy also produces some carbon and pollution, but less than what nuclear or hydrocarbons produce. And of course I agree that energy conservation is better than needing to build more energy capacity, even if it is renewable. I've said that in at least 3 previous emails, so I didn't feel the need to repeat it here.

The onus may be on me, but I think I've sufficiently supported my point. On the other hand, you have made selective and tangential counter points that aren't supported by any data. Why is nuclear inferior? Cost and pollution. You failed to produce any evidence to the contrary (and you've especially avoided the topics of costly plant decommissioning and waste management). All you've basically said is, "Trust me that the electricity coming out of a nuclear plant costs 5 cents/kWh if you ignore the up-front costs." The whole point of nuclear's inferiority is its huge up-front (and back-end) costs.

And one last point - there is no nuclear power without fuel supply. I forgot to add this to my original email but an MIT study estimates that the Earth has enough uranium for 1,000 GW-scale reactors for at least 50 years. Sounds great, but actually our ability to discover, mine, and produce fuel-grade material will not be able to keep up with the industry's hopes for growth. Each GW-size plant requires about 200 metric tons of uranium per year. Multiply that over all plants, and fuel production can't keep up: in 2004 plants needed 68,000 metric tons of fuel, but all mines only produced 39,000, with the remainder coming from Cold War inventories, recycling, and conversions of weapons-grade material. But our stockpiles are due to run out by 2020, possibly leading to a nuclear fuel shortage. I guess you could argue that we'll just make new mines. Do a Google search for the uranium mining industries in Australia, Colorado, and the Dakotas, and see how that is working out.

i lived about 15 miles away from TMI in 1979.  I can tell you right now, they lied about the emmissions from that leak. Fish kills, dead cows with sores were found downwind in the first couple of days after the leak.
 My father was not a nuclear engineer, but he was a good soldier and he watched over a big hole in almagordo testing grounds 5 years after the bomb was tested.  My father died from multifoci maligniancies that are indicative of radiation exposure(I did work in environmental cancinogen research and the PI I worked with wrote many papers regarding this type of cancer associated exclusively with ionizing radiation exposure).  he was never sick at almagordo and it took 50 years to catch up with him but it killed him nonetheless.  I am supposing that most likely I will suffer the same fate from my exposures in 1979.
The benefit to these plants is the money's made and the plant's long gone before the illnesses start.  With current trends, most likely they would claim that there is little proof tying the rad. exp. and the cancers together.  Is this worth it to you?  Is this the risk you want to take?  Then the contractors, the plant owners and all who profit from the building of these plants should be bound to live in the shadow of the cooling towers. 
Also, TMI is not paid off.  Lmerick power plant(35mi. east of TMI) is not paid off.  That region has one of the highest electricity rates in the country due to the payments on these plants.

Why nuclear power won't save us from climate change and oil addiction

Maybe you were like me and assumed that expanded nuclear fission power could help humanity wean itself off fossil fuel derived electricity, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As of 2009, it supplied 20% of all US electricity, which is greater than all renewable sources combined. It seems like a perfectly "clean" technology: radioisotopes react in a controlled manner, creating heat that evaporates industrial water into steam that turns giant turbines, which powers our homes, businesses, and eventually cars too. The only major waste produced is heat and water. There are plenty of pro-nuclear "data" and persuasive marketing out there (http://www.world-nuclear.org/education/comparativeco2.html) to suggest that nuclear is the answer, but I'm not so sure.

Apart from the obvious and still legitimate concerns for plant accidents and waste disposal, nuclear power is a lot dirtier and inefficient than the industry and their political allies would admit, because we have to take the entire "nuclear fuel cycle" into account. First of all, as anyone following the Iranian uranium enrichment saga would know, fuel-grade material doesn't magically seep out of the ground like oil (and even oil must be refined before it is more useful). Uranium and plutonium isotopes have to be processed, concentrated, and separated from non-fissile material in a huge series of centrifuges, which of course requires lots of power to run and therefore have a big carbon footprint. Uranium mining and transportation is also energy-intensive, and any nuclear power plant must have adequate security in the post-9/11 world, which also adds to the cost of every KW produced. Also, high quality uranium is the least carbon-intensive, but quality ore mostly comes from Canada, and some of their major mines are nearing depletion. All other global uranium deposits in the US, Australia, and elsewhere have lower quality material and therefore higher pollution potential.

Obviously the up-front costs of plant construction are huge (maybe $10B, like the recent estimate for a new South Carolina project), also taking into account very generous government subsidies and tax breaks that the renewable energy industry doesn't even come close to enjoying. To be fair, nuclear's gross subsidies are huge vs. renewables, but appear much more reasonable on a per-MW basis ($24 for solar vs. $1.56 for nuclear), though this is partly due to the huge scale of nuclear plants vs. renewable projects. And let's remember that part of renewables' subsidies is a premium we're paying to avoid pollution. It's not meant to be the most economical energy source, though some renewables proponents would argue that it can be with proper government support, less superfluous aid to dirty energy, and consideration of the indirect costs of emissions (such as the BP spill, and health/productivity losses due to respiratory diseases).

With current technology, nuclear plants are built for a service life of 15-60 years, and must be decommissioned in a complex and even more costly process (maybe 2-10X construction cost, taking waste storage into account also). Therefore, many of the plants that were built by the G20 during the Cold War are aging, and half of the world's 443 large-scale reactors will be considered for retirement by 2012. So if the nuclear industry wants to boost their slice of the energy pie, they will need to invest in many new plants that they probably can't afford, and couldn't find the real estate for anyway, since they can't just build on top of a former plant site for 30-100 years, due to possible contamination from decommissioning. Also, an MIT study estimates that the Earth has enough uranium for 1,000 gigawatt-scale reactors for at least 50 years. Sounds great, but actually our ability to discover, mine, and produce fuel-grade material will not be able to keep up with the industry's hopes for growth. Each GW-size plant requires about 200 metric tons of uranium per year. Multiply that over all plants, and fuel production can't keep up: in 2004 plants needed 68,000 metric tons of fuel, but mines only produced 39,000, with the remainder coming from Cold War inventories, recycling, conversions of weapons-grade material. But our stockpiles are due to run out by 2020, possibly leading to a nuclear fuel shortage. That's why the IAEA expects nuclear power production to peak around 2015 and then taper off by 2030 to below-present levels. Nuclear currently supplies 6% of global energy, and may only peak at 10-14%, despite about $2T in total global investment since the technology became available. Just imagine if we spent that much on renewables.

The US hasn't built a new nuclear plant since 1978, and although (even more) new plant constructions subsidies are in Obama's energy plan, I don't know how it's going to pan out, because it's hard enough to get approval to build a much safer and smaller natural gas power plant. Plus with more nuclear plants comes more fuel waste to store in giant steel/concrete tanks at guarded facilities. Already 50% of Americans live within 75 miles of an above-ground nuclear spent-fuel site (whether they know it or not, according to the Federation of American Scientists), so probably the "not in my backyard" mentality will obstruct nuclear's growth (especially with the $50-100B Yucca Mountain waste repository project still in limbo and many logistical issues still unresolved).

All things considered, the DOE estimates that the economic and environmental costs of nuclear power (using current data) make it dirtier and less efficient than all other renewable energy sources but solar (due to very expensive photovoltaics), and in some cases, worse than traditional coal or natural gas power plants (8-13 cents/KWH for nuclear, vs. 6-12 cents/KWH natural gas, 6-23 cents/KWH coal, 3-9 cents/KWH wind/hydro). The DOE also estimates that nuclear's net energy (output divided by all energy inputs needed for the entire nuclear fuel cycle) is about 0.3 to heat a home, meaning we're actually taking an energy LOSS going nuclear (as in, 100 KW must be spent for every 30 KW of electric heating created). Compare this to passive solar home heating with a net energy of 5.8, or a natural gas furnace at 4.9 (which also creates CO2 unfortunately).

Then there's the old hope that technology will save us. New nuclear plant designs do have improved safety and economics, but probably won't make a big enough difference to make nuclear a more attractive energy source. New breeder plants actually produce plutonium while they consume uranium, supposedly making them nearly "renewable", but the technology is unproven, and fuel is not the major cost concern of nuclear power (though as I mentioned above, fuel supply shortage is a concern which breeder plants could potentially mitigate). Nuclear-friendly France experimented with a breeder plant that opened in 1986, but was closed just 12 years later due to operating cost overruns (in addition to the $13B to build it). Consequently, other nations have canceled breeder projects before breaking ground.

Humans will always tinker with clever ways to generate energy, but of course it takes energy to make energy. If you believe the climate scientists, we don't have a lot of time to counteract major climate change, if it's not already too late. The days of cheap oil are over, but drops in supply will be gradual, and maybe slow enough to prevent major public outcry forcing politicians to enact energy reform. We don't have the resources to invest in ridiculously expensive energy sources like nuclear that may not even provide much benefit over hydrocarbons. Obviously the best way to create new energy is to not waste what we already have, so improvements in CAFE standards, greening buildings, and more sustainable consumption habits will be like creating a new Saudi Arabia in the long run. And what do we have to lose by giving renewables a fair chance, and at least as much government support as dirty energy has enjoyed over the years? I know there are still socioeconomic and environmental costs associated with wind farms and dams, but at least failures there don't compare with Chernobyl or Valdez. Every venture has risk, but the upside of large-scale renewable power is much better than nuclear, "clean coal", or other alternatives.

"Americans are always finding ways to be more responsible" must be the most laughable brown-nosing lie I can possibly think of. You Americans are so awesome... pleeeaaase buy more of our $70K vehicles to rescue our sinking profits! Because when I think of America, I think of responsibility (trillions of dollars of government and consumer debt, Wall Street bailout, housing bubble, #2 polluter behind China, #1 energy user, #2 arms exporter behind Russia, #2 nuclear arsenal behind Russia, etc. etc.). And when I think of BMW, I think environmentally conscious. Heck just producing that inane ad probably cost us all a ton of CO2.

They brag about their vehicles that get 28 MPG highway in "simulated driving". If BMW really cared about the environment, they would shutter all operations and invest their assets in green tech. Because every car BMW sends to the showroom and every minute their business operations run causes pollution. And the same can be said of most companies of course. You can't have your cake and eat it too. These rich assholes want to justify their lavish, wasteful spending as eco-conscious? Please. Just accept that you are killing the Earth for your own consumerist pleasure and don't sugar-coat the truth. Or if you really care, spend the $70K differently: buy a $16K Civic, a $200 bike, and donate the rest of the money to environmental projects. I would rather the BMW ads just cut the crap and say, "BMW: We make fancy, expensive cars that burn a lot of gas so you can drive fast to try to impress chicks. Just make sure you keep up with your payments and sorry for our poor reliability record."

Put this in writing... I'll NEVER purchase an automobile that costs more than $30K (inflation-adjusted). It's not a priority for me and I can think of better ways to use the cash, plus currently my savings rate is like zero due to being mortgage poor. I suck at picking stocks and my job has very little upward mobility, so I doubt BMW is in my future haha. I prefer Japanese cars (since I'm a racist), but for Euro models, currently my "dream car" is probably a VW TDI.

Sure it would be fun to tool around in a M6, and I guess it would be nice if one of you got me one for my b-day (hint, hint), but it's just decadent. I am trying to be one of those "responsible Americans" that the ugly marketing guy in the commercial spoke of. Well, regardless of what vehicle we choose to buy and drive, my point was I don't endorse the "green consciousness" fad that somehow exonerates us of our unsustainable, polluting habits of our Western lifestyle just because we buy a few CFLs and some locally-grown produce (which in some cases, is more polluting than more efficently-grown imported foods: http://www.boston.com/news/globe/ideas/articles/2007/07/22/the_localvores_dilemma/). I accept the truth that my life choices are killing the planet and I don't care enough to change. Humans and our industrialized mass commerce-consumption (nuclear weapons being a part of it) is the biggest threat to Earthly life since the dinosaur's meteor. We may not destroy the planet overnight, but we're surely not helping any. Even though I believe that, I try not to be defeatist about it, and seek to reduce my harm by conserving resources and buying less-polluting products. But still I'm in the negative overall because I am addicted to electricity, driving, and meat. I just wish ad campaigns wouldn't try to make us feel good about doing bad. Buying a BMW or even a Prius doesn't make you a champion of the environment under any circumstances, but I guess it might make you feel better about yourself.

Yes it's true that any car hurts the environment, but a Civic does less harm than a BMW. I guess it's a trade-off. Unless you go tribal, you probably need a vehicle to get you places. For those people who want to be "carbon neutral" (impossible, but a nice gesture), they can drive a minimally-polluting auto and maybe invest in environment-positive ventures on the side. Surely NGOs are not as efficient as large governments when it comes to environmentalism (scale, resources, laws), but at least NGOs can take action faster and not get bogged down in politics. How likely do you think "cap and trade" is of passing this year? We still have a third of Congress that doesn't believe global warming has a human cause (we still have a contingent of Congress that believes the Earth is 6,000 years old). Plus the environmental savings of Obama's plan is questionable since no one really knows what is an "acceptable" level of carbon output to cap the US economy at, nor how to price and distribute credits fairly. We'll see if that big summit in Denmark coming up bears any fruits.

But forget all this sustainable living crap, we have more important things to talk about: KanYe at the VMAs... OMG OMG, Twitter about it!!!!

The consequences of our consumption


Sorry for the Monday guilt-trip, but just some food for though about our Western lifestyles and the unintended indirect consequences of our consumption. Marketplace is airing an interesting series about American consumerism with some scary statistics. I know humans want to live comfortably, and we probably believe that we deserve to live the good life as a product of our education, social class, and skilled labor contributions to the economy. Maybe we feel entitled to it and so far it's not illegal, but still it's a jarring realization that the lifestyle we enjoy and take for granted is absolutely unsustainable globally. It is too wasteful, and has and will continue to contribute to global crises and conflicts. I know all humans can't live as well as Americans, many people don't want to, and are perfectly happy with much less. We might blame the government and companies for not doing enough to curb waste and improve sustainability, but ultimately it's the consumer's fault. We bought into the wasteful lifestyle, and companies responded by marketing products that appeal to our preferences. The government also responded because we elected leaders who will see to it that the lifestyle we desire is preserved at whatever cost. I know a small "green revolution" is starting in some industrialized nations, but it needs to really snowball before it can even make a dent in the larger wasteful system of consumption.

My household is slightly below average (5 Earths instead of 6). We live in an apartment and don't buy much which works in our favor, but I drive a lot and eat too much meat/dairy, which is of course wasteful.

Still, when my colleague Joellen crunched the survey numbers, the results were kind of startling: If everyone on the planet lived like the average person in this house, it would take about three planet Earths to sustain our population.

The pollution caused by transporting goods across continents

Nineteen percent of the children in Long Beach have been diagnosed with asthma -- that's nearly double the national rate. This port city is an air pollution hot spot, one of the worst in the country.

The culprit is "fine particulate matter." This and other diesel pollutants have increased so much in recent years they now merit their own category: it's called "Goods Movement Pollution." And it pours out of all the diesel trains, trucks and ships that bring us consumer products.

But it also has 2,000 times more noxious sulfur than the diesel used by trucks.

Elisa Nicholas: This is really much more serious than we had thought before.

Elisa Nicholas is CEO of Long Beach Children's Clinic. She says lung function isn't only at risk, but the actual formation of this vital organ, as well.

Nicholas: We now have studies that actually have shown decreased lung growth that is associated with air pollution.

And that's not all: Particulate pollution is now linked to cancer and heart disease. Frank O'Donnell, president of Clean Air Watch, says transport emissions may be most severe in Southern California, but they're actually a national problem.

Frank O'Donnell: The U.S. EPA has noted that particulate pollution from diesel engines has shortened the lives of more than 20,000 Americans each year.

That's 20,000 Americans essentially dying from consumption and its infrastructure. Officials at the ports of L.A . and Long Beach are now aggressively trying to reduce diesel emissions.

Atwood: Southern Californians are paying a portion of the price of our relatively cheap consumer goods with their health, with their own lungs. This has to change.

Problem is, it's unclear who's in charge. Shippers say they're governed by international law, not local regulations. Interstate rail companies say only federal laws apply to them. Short-haul truckers plead poverty in the face of costly fees and upgrades. And if clean-up mandates become too onerous, says Art Wong, it puts the port at risk.

Wong: There's always the threat that if we scare this business away, we will have cost this region many thousands of jobs. We're in competition with ports up and down the West Coast that would love to take this business away from us.

Garbage piling up

Since 1960, America's population has grown by 60 percent, but the amount of garbage we generate has grown 180 percent.

John does a lot of curbside recycling on his route, as well as filling the recycling bin at home. He's convinced that the rest of us want to do the right thing too as long as it's not too time-consuming.

He laughs, but still wonders whether anybody ever thinks about where all their discarded junk is going or what happens to it when it gets there -- like turning into greenhouse gases: landfills are the largest human source of methane in the U.S.

We don't see the methane, but we don't really see the trash either after it leaves the curb. It just kind of disappears. I asked him whether that makes it easier for all of us to just keep buying and consuming and then tossing our stuff away.

Wilucz: I don't think so. We will run out of space, and how we deal with it may be more the question we need to address.

Here in Los Angeles County, half of our landfills are slated to close in the next decade and a half, including the largest one in the country, Puente Hills. They'll all be closed by 2053.

OK, so none of us can throw anything out -- ever again.

But believe it or not, some places actually want our garbage. The U.S. imports trash from Canada and hazardous waste from Mexico. Why? Money. A report from the Congressional Research Service shows more than 42 tons of municipal solid waste crossed state lines for disposal in 2005.

Pennsylvania is the country's biggest trash importer.

Pat Couturiaux: We need the jobs.

The main reason might actually be profit. Heather Rogers wrote the book "Gone Tomorrow: The Hidden Life of Garbage." She says in the 1960s and 70s, private haulers like Waste Management began buying up local landfills.

Today, just a handful of multinational corporations handle most of our waste. Rogers says to maximize efficiency, they've built ever larger regional "mega-fills" and to maximize profits, those landfills seek garbage from farther and farther afield.

Heather Rogers: This exporting is not happening because it makes sense environmentally. It's not happening because it's creating jobs in rural areas. It's happening because it makes economic sense for these corporations to run their facilities in this way.

Landfills may be better neighbors than they were a few decades ago, but they still tend to end up in communities that are poor, or rural or otherwise less politically powerful -- places like Rush Township.

Disposable everything

When did fixing things get more expensive than buying the new version? We asked Marketplace's Sean Cole to investigate the demise of the fix-it culture.

Plekavich: The repair world is shrinking. Certain shops have given up; they just can't take the low volume. And we're lucky that we don't have too much competition in this area.

Plekavich: Because it's expensive to buy all the equipment and send the technicians for training and that type of thing.

Soloway: No, you know, with the advent of disposable stuff.

Stuff that costs less but also breaks sooner. And because it's so cheap, it just feeds into this vicious cycle of buy, throw away, buy, throw away -- a cycle that both Eds know well.

Plekavich: So, if our repair charges are, say $125, and it sells for $135, of course you can't convince anyone to have it repaired.

Greyser: Time is a cost. So you have to go there, you have to park there and then you have to wait or come back. So, you put that all together and you ask yourself, is it easier to say "you know it's time for a new one."

The question is which came first: the lack of available expertise or the lack of demand for repairs? Stuff still breaks, but somehow we've all -- as a society -- stepped away from the proverbial fix-it shop.

Wasting food

Tess Vigeland: We've already heard how we're running out of landfill space. Well, believe it or not, more than 10 percent of that trash is food.

A University of Arizona study found that each of us throws away more than a pound of food every day: half a hamburger here, an unused container of sour cream there...

Kalish: We're salvaging food that is not garbage and we're finding a way to consume what shouldn't have been put in the trash in the first place.

Vigeland: Do you ever get concerned about the quality of the food that you're taking from the streets?

Kalish: What concerns me is that the quality is so high.

Here's what the group found in the first 10 minutes of the search, outside a store near 38th and Third.

Adam Weissman: Here is Styrofoam-packed pre-cut carrots -- 'cause we can't cut our own carrots anymore apparently.

Vigeland: I'm just astounded at this pile of beautiful-looking bread.

Kalish: Multiply this by all of the bakeries, the pastry shops, all throughout the city. Every single day, they're all boasting that it's made fresh every hour. How can they do that? By throwing it out.

The group gathered cartons of not-yet-expired eggs, boxes of butter, plastic-wrapped broccoli and celery. From outside the celery looked wilted, but removed from its packaging, just one stalk had gone bad. The rest was perfectly edible.

That study we mentioned earlier says American households toss out $43 billion worth of food each year. 15 percent of that waste either hasn't expired or is never even opened.

Weissman: Well, I think the question for all of us is simply, well, to ask questions with every consumption choice we make. Not necessarily to feel this well of guilt over how we've lived our lives, but to ask ourselves how can we continue to live our lives?

Greed as a disease

Scott Jagow: Our need to constantly have more may be a disease. A mental illness, perhaps a physical one. Professor Peter Whybrow studies neuroscience and human behavior at UCLA. He's written a book called American Mania.

Peter Whybrow: What it basically points out is that we have a frenzy around certain material things that we just can't do without anymore in our lives. So we've moved from need to desire to craving, basically. We grew up in scarcity -- we evolved in scarcity, that is -- so in fact, most of us don't know what to do with abundance.

Jagow: How did we go from evolving from scarcity to this point?

Whybrow: Well, I think it's been very complex, but in the last 20 years, we sped everything up. Suddenly, there was a fast new world in which everybody could work all day and all night. You spend all night here working for the morning program...

Jagow: Yes I do.

Whybrow: And you do that because the world is still going on while the rest of us are asleep. We've essentially taken the brakes off the business cycle in this country, and what that has done is it's brought extraordinary material abundance. And we don't quite know what to do with stuff.

Jagow: So as a public health issue, what is happening to us?

Whybrow: Well, I think we are pushing ourselves to our physiological limit. You can't do the things we're doing without seeing the predictable outcomes of obesity, Type II diabetes, sleep depravation, anxiety, depression... All those things are predictable if you live a life where you're constantly at the edge.

Whybrow: Well, we could stop it -- you know, the good thing about the human being is we do have a rational part of ourselves. The only problem is, at the moment that's all we have, because all the social restraints have disappeared. And when you take off the social brakes, and we have individualism as the icon of what we're all trying to achieve, there's no social feedback that traditionally in the market has prevented people from being greedy, to put it bluntly. I mean, if you look around, there are lots of evidence of greed, which I consider to be a behavioral disorder.

Accelerating consumption

Scott Jagow: Belts, shoes, iPods, cell phones... in the past 20 years, U.S. consumption has nearly doubled. How can we possibly keep up that pace? The scary thing is, our buying spree might speed up before it slows down.

She says she owns a hundred pairs of shoes, and shops about once a week.

Juliet Schor: Now, if you're talking about the whole world doing that, that will have big ripple effects throughout the economy and the ecology.

That's Juliet Schor. She teaches sociology at Boston College and wrote the book "Born to Buy." She says for one thing, as clothing has gotten cheaper, we're buying more of it -- almost twice as much in this country as we did 15 years ago. Schor says each blouse and boxer short takes a toll on the Earth, from the pesticides used to grow cotton to the carbon released transporting it. And there's a subtler toll:

Schor: Every individual has to do a lot more work to stay current. It's like a treadmill, where we just speed up but we're all just staying in place.

Next is UCLA professor Jared Diamond, who wrote the Pulizter-winning Guns, Germs, and Steel (elucidating the environmental factors that may have contributed to the unequal distribution of wealth/power we see today among peoples) and more recently Collapse (how societies fall due to environmental mismanagement).

KAI RYSSDAL: There's a technical term for what we're doing as we eat, shop, drive and go about our daily lives. The word is "overshoot" -- when a population uses up resources faster than they can be replaced.

Today, we're consuming about 30 percent more trees, fish and fossil fuels than the planet can regenerate. We can run a deficit like this for a little while, but there are limits to how big a hole we can dig before it gets too deep to get out of.

Jared Diamond: Of course we are in overshoot and everybody knows that we are in overshoot -- and we are overshooting the things that people talk most about. First thing we're running out of is oil, and everybody knows it. Second thing we're running out of is water. Something like 70 percent of the fresh water in the world is already utilized. Topsoil -- we're exploiting it and it's running off into the ocean. We've already exhausted something like maybe half of the topsoil that was originally in the Great Plains. And then fish and forests...

RYSSDAL: It seems to me what we're missing is the "or else" part of this discussion... There's a whole list of things we have to fix -- what happens if we don't?

Diamond: History is full of the "or elses." For example, the most advanced Native American society of the New World, the Maya, had astronomy and astronomical observatories and writing and books. They chopped down their trees, they ran into water problems, and the big Maya cities that American tourists go to visit today, they go abandoned.

RYSSDAL: Are we seeing those crashes anywhere today?

Diamond: Absolutely. The African country of Rwanda, the most densely population country in Africa, began to get deforested, massive problems of soil erosion, too many people and not enough food... And in 1994 Rwandans transiently quote "solved" -- if I can put it in quotes -- their population problems in the most awful way imaginable. Namely, six million Rwandans killed, one million Rwandans in brutal ways, and drove another two million into exile. That's an example of a country that did not master its environmental problems.

RYSSDAL: How much time to we have left?

Diamond: If we carried on as we are now, then I would expect that we will not have a First World lifestyle anywhere sometime between 30 and 50 years from now.

RYSSDAL: Concentrates the mind...

An "alternative view" to Jared Diamond's Collapse:

Jerry Taylor: The case for sustainability seems reasonable enough. After all, who is for "unsustainability"? But trying to pin down what sustainability means is like trying to nail Jell-O to a wall.

One of the more popular definitions comes from the U.N., which defines sustainability as that which "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." But how can we reasonably be expected to know what the needs of people in 2107 might be? The challenges they might face are no more obvious to us than our present-day challenges might be to people living in 1907.

Nevertheless, the U.N. definition can be read as a call to improve human welfare over time. An entire profession has grown up around that proposition. It is known as economics. Accordingly, let me suggest that Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations was the world's first and best blueprint for sustainable development as defined by the U.N.

Some understand sustainability as a call to protect the natural resource base from deteriorating so that future generations will be as blessed as we are. But the wealth created by exploiting resources is often more beneficial than the wealth preserved by "banking" those resources for future use. Otherwise, there would be little point in exploiting resources for commercial use in the first place.

Fine, you might say. But isn't there a case for making sure that important resources are maintained at a "minimum critical level" and that the proceeds of their use be preserved for future generations? Sure -- but that's functionally indistinguishable from the mission to maximize human welfare over time.

There's nothing necessarily wrong with sustainability. It just doesn't add much to the intellectual conversation.

My political twist:

Developed nations live so well partly at the expense of the Third World. Probably more wars have been fought over resources, productive land, and wealth inequalities than religion, ideology, and ethnicity – which may just be ancillary factors to motivate people to fight over more banal economic issues. The Third World doesn't hate us for being rich, because even staunchly anti-American foreigners desire to send their children to American universities to have a chance at a better job and better life. But I think some people are irritated by G8 nations already enjoying so much wealth, yet constantly attempting to acquire more and meddle in the rest of the world's affairs (by unscrupulous means if necessary). I think people accept that there will always be rich and poor despite personal achievement and environmental factors. But I think people are tired of our accelerating greed. We already have it all, yet still want more and refuse to share even the crumbs from our table. In fact, some might think that wealthy nations actively keep the poor down with the bottom of our boot. There are plenty of examples:

Backlash against illegals – who actually contribute more to our economy (via sales tax and Social Security payments that they will never collect on) than many trust fund bluebloods who exploit every little tax loophole.

The Colonial Era has ended, so at least it's no longer acceptable to simply invade sovereign nations, enslave their people, and pillage their resources. But with industrialized nations/companies controlling all financial markets and most of the means of production, they no longer need troops on the ground to manipulate foreign peoples. No matter what our politicians say, much of the Muslim world believes that the US/UK went into Iraq for their oil. If Al Qaeda hates our democracy and freedom so much, then why did they attack the World Trade Center and not the Statue of Liberty/US Capitol? They attacked a financial center and symbol of Western economic achievement. I think to them, Western economic exploitation is more of an affront to their beliefs rather than the liberal freedoms and democracy that we enjoy.

This whole sustainability thing is a little bit off though on its results. The fact of the matter is, at no point will everyone on earth have what America has. If the money got redistributed globally and there were no third world countries, America wouldn’t be rich in comparison, our standard of living would fall. And then the people who are REALLY rich will be the people living like there are 7 earths all there to feed them. The stats say that someone making 60k is in the top 10% or so globally. So if I am in the top 10% of course I’m going to consume more than the other 90%, or at least there is a large probability I will. Why is that “wrong”? It is technically impossible to use more than 1 earth’s worth of resources, and what is available will be distributed to those who can pay for it. Those who can pay more will get more. Fair or unfair, the end result will be the same. So the only thing I do by reducing my consumption is allow for some other person to increase their consumption. That would be a good thing if it allowed the bottom 10% to take my share, but that isn’t how it works. In my opinion the focus should be away from reducing the top and towards increasing the bottom. Of course, actual solutions to these problems…I don’t have any.

The question isn't about redistribution necessarily, it's about sustainability. One doesn't necessarily imply the other. You can imagine a world with one rich person and a bunch of poor people, and if the rich person cut his consumption appropriately, we might have a sustainable level of consumption. The problem is that the cost of non-sustainable methods are not passed on directly to the consumer (well...maybe oil wars count). Do you really need like 3 plastic bags if you buy a pencil from Long Drugs or all of that annoying packaging on EVERYTHING? No one else in the world does that, and it has a serious impact on the environment. It doesn't bother most Americans because they don't have to pay the cost on increasing landfills, etc.

Furthermore, there is no obvious link between environmental sustainability and economic power in the developed world. The SF Bay Area is the most advanced on environmental regulations (oil spill notwithstanding) in the US, but also the strongest economic power. Strong economic growth in the UK seems to be happening despite more robust environmental regulations than the US. There is no good reason to keep low mileage vehicles in the market for the general consumer; how does that promote economic growth? My point is simply that there are plenty of superfluous elements to our consumption habits that have a strong effect on the environment, and refusal to change those habits seems indefensible to me.

This seems like the curse of Malthus to me. In the early 19th century, Thomas Malthus predicted the population of the world would continue growing at a furious rate and the population would outstrip resources, causing catastrophe. Of course, he was wrong; in the developed world, many countries are actually experiencing population decline. It is peculiar, though, that while we have slowed population growth, we haven't slowed natural resource consumption. Over the next 50 to 100 years, consumption patterns in the developed world will change drastically (we can already see hints of this with the rising price of oil, even though we just discovered massive reserves in the Gulf not that long ago). I believe the Europeans are in much better place to adjust to these changes, as the costs of keeping our lifestyle become unbearable. For instance, at some point in the near future it will be economically beneficial to have a lot more public transportation, but the US has yet to invest in this infrastructure.

I wasn’t saying that redistribution implies sustainability, i’m just saying that when the richest 10% live an “unsustainable” lifestyle, I don’t know if it really is unsustainable. Most tests say, IF every person lived like you, we would need 7 earths. My point was that almost no one lives like we do statistically. So it may be quite sustainable given the disparity. Not to say that 3 plastic bags isn’t a waste, or that we couldn’t do better. The redistribution example was just an attempt to point out what I just stated.

And I believe that while you can say wow look at the SF bay area, environmental tough guys AND they make money, the problem with a lot of economic powerhouses is that they don’t sell “things”. Production is where the pollution is at. Google only takes the electricity it takes to light the building, and they need dump trucks to haul the cash they make. While an area whose wealth is derived from say…coal burning plants, will have a much tougher time maintaining economic growth under pollution laws. I would like to see industrial areas thrive under hard pollution laws. Not that it is impossible, but when “tech” areas and mostly white collar work is generating your economic status, pollution is a much smaller problem.

I do agree whole heartedly with J on the last point though, the us is SCREWED when it comes to public transportation infrastructure. There are a handful of cities in the entire country that have feasible mass transit systems in place. LA is not one of them. For me to bus to work would take 1hour and 48 minutes according to the public transit site. And I would have to walk a mile. Problem is…I only live 8 miles from my workplace!

As you both said, this issue is not about communistic wealth redistribution. It's about changing our consumer habits for our own SURVIVAL. Because not even the super rich will be able to enjoy all their toys when ecosystems have collapsed, people have taken up arms against one another scrapping for finite resources, and global markets are rendered nonfunctional.

To respond to M's argument on sustainability: yes you are right. The richest 5% of people on Earth can basically afford to live "unsustainably" because the bottom 50% does live way below the sustainability limit. But the top lives decadently at the EXPENSE of the poor. And as we've seen throughout history, that social arrangement can't last and is often overthrown violently (France and Russia come to mind). I thought this was the 21 st Century. What you are basically describing is economic feudalism. It's not the royals and the serfs anymore, but the rich with means and the poor without. Our modern lifestyle is the most wasteful of resources and polluting. But rich people don't observe the consequences because they don't live near landfills or strip mines. Yes it's fine to live comfortably if you're not taking anything away from anyone else, or if you solely shoulder the burdens of your consumption. But it never works like that. Our consumer ways negatively impact millions of people around the globe who don't deserve it.

The consumption that you or I engage in is not against the law, but it's not harm-free. We don't have to be Amish, but we could all scale back. It's good for us, for our neighbors, and for the planet. And of course everyone can't concurrently enjoy our high standard of living. But does that mean we have to continue to be wasteful and decadent to prove the point? It is not a zero-sum game. Just because you don't buy that Abercrombie sweater doesn't mean someone else has to. And just because we can do a thing doesn't mean we need to. If we all get more selective and buy less, then companies will scale back and produce less (or produce fewer, better products!), which will reduce energy and raw materials waste, and those resources could be utilized in other necessary projects (or saved for posterity). Of course less consumption means fewer jobs and less money changing hands in the financial markets, so it depends where your priorities are. And since when was saving money a bad thing? Cumulative American personal debt is above $2 trillion (not quite as bad as the federal government at $30 trillion plus!), and the personal savings rate was uninterruptedly negative for over 12 months (the last time that happened was THE GREAT DEPRESSION). We're spending $1.06 for every dollar we earn. Is that sustainable? When do we put on the breaks? So even if the rich get to spend lavishly because they can afford it, the sub-rich definitely need to come to their senses, if not for the planet then for themselves.

Pulling the excuse that you guys gave for the real estate profiteering story after the SoCal fires, this sustainability series is not from the Sierra Club. It's from Marketplace - an economics and commerce themed program. Why would business journalists investigate the negative consequences of consumerism instead of telling listeners to keep buying more? That would be like the Vatican hosting a viewing of "The Da Vinci Code". But as the Jerry Taylor op-ed described, economics is basically the study of maximizing efficiency for the material welfare of humankind. Commerce that is hurtful, wasteful, and out-of-control is inefficient and threatens human welfare in the long run. So greed is NOT good if you desire long-term business success. Economics is inherently the study of sustainability. Sustainability doesn't mean we have to sit on useful resources and save them for the 23 rd Century. But we can be intelligent and conscientious stewards of the precious, finite resources we have.

Can we consider the communal good over the individual? If you live in a household with light eaters, does that excuse you to gorge yourself on costly gourmet meals every day, just because you can? It's still affordable since the others only eat salad, but isn't something wrong there? And what if your sibling suddenly decided that he also wants steak and lobster every day like you (no reference to Glarg intended)? Now all of a sudden you have to scale back and share, or fight every day to see who gets the good food and who goes without. That family might be economically solvent, but the unequal social arrangements are problematic and probably unsustainable.

Maybe that "global family" scenario is playing out among America, other industrialized nations, and rapidly developing nations like China. Just 40 years ago, most Americans could cheaply enjoy a suburban lifestyle, and China was an almost feudal agrarian society with hardly a carbon imprint. Now China rivals America for top polluter status, and both have growing economies that procure raw materials and produce waste at a rate never before seen in history. We and other nations are scouring the globe and scrambling to secure lumber, metals, water, hydrocarbons, and other basic resources. Globalized trade has served to increase the wealth of many undeveloped nations and given them access to new consumer markets. India, Mexico, and others may follow China's lead. And China is following our lead. What do they do with all their newfound wealth (for the 10% of China that is "upper or middle class" at least)? They copy Americans. China is now the #2 buyer of SUVs and diamonds, to name a few. Soon there may be more Starbucks and Walmarts in China than the US. Even the simple habits we practice at home have serious global repercussions.

I don't think we can really divorce the "high tech" sector from the dirtier "traditional" industry. Companies like Google only exist because of the demand to better utilize the computer economy and industrial infrastructure that came before. The internet doesn't exist in a vacuum, so you need circuit boards, displays, cables, electricity, plastics, and other traditional raw materials to sustain it. The electricity usually comes from coal-fired power plants. The plastics come from fossil fuel refining. The wires, microchips, and other components come from ore mines, metal foundries, chemical treatment plants, and semiconductor/transistor manufacturing. None of that is very clean. And then there's all the energy and material waste of packing, transporting, and marketing those goods to the consumer. Clearly it's not Google's fault that we buy so many computers, but such companies only exist to increase computer usage. Therefore they share some responsibility in the industry's environmental and social costs.

So even if Google's headquarters are fairly green (no cooling towers, hazardous waste, or smokestacks), the impact to sustainability of their business is obvious. And one might argue that Google even increases pollution and nonrenewable consumption because its corporate goal is to basically keep users online viewing their content as much as possible (so as to increase advertising exposure). The more people are online, the more electricity they are wasting. Yes computers and the internet increase human productivity, make our lives better, and may even save lives, but then there's the countless hours wasted on YouTube and whatnot. I'd rather have a world with computers and Google than without, but certainly the industry (like all industries) could be cleaner. Greenpeace labeled Cupertino-based Apple (yes, trendy progressive Apple) the lowest among computer/wireless companies in terms of green policies ( http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/20061206/apple-greenpeace.htm). Surely Apple and Google are no Dow/Union Carbide killing thousands in Bhopal, India ( http://www.american.edu/TED/bhopal.htm), but just because they deal in "high tech" doesn't make them automatically nonpolluting.

Are you serious about your commute situation? Dang that is sad for LA transit. I guess you could always use a bike and get to work in 30 minutes or so. But I'm not judging – I drive 15 miles to work every day because Caltrain sucks.
